Who knew that I would be writing an US Open golf blog the night of a Bruins Stanley Cup 7th game in June. Except for the Golf Boys music video and Tiger withdrawing, the third PGA Major has been in the shadows of a good Dallas – Heat NBA finals and an epic Bruins – Canucks Stanley Cup battle. The 2011 and 111th US Open stops in Bethesda, Maryland – the National Championship of golf – is my 2nd favorite major tournament. The Congressional Golf Course is a Deveraux Emmet design, the defending US Open championship is Graeme McDowell (Pebble Beach) and the defending US Open Champion at Congressional is Ernie Els (1997). The trick to winning this week is putting, accuracy off the team, greens in reg and did I say putting? Scores should be low, don’t expect anything over -10/-11, the field is wide open. Gonna roll with these guys…
Dustin Johnson +1800 – This is my first bet on paper, but I added it last, his Pebble and Whistling Staits debacles happen to a player once in their career and he had two in the same season. He handled it like a champ, I ike a redemption story.
Matt Kuchar +1800 – Is there a player anymore overdue than Kuchar? He’s slowly turning into the modern day Mickelson before Phil won a Major. He definitely has the game to win a Major anywhere and it fits Congressional perfectly. He’s played in 14 events made 11 cuts, has 8 top 10s, a 3rd place and a 2nd. Wow. Kooch also is 12th on the Tour in GIR and 30th on the tour making putts between 10-15 feet which will be important this week. I won’t be surprise at all if he is hosting the Cup on Sunday.
Bubba Watson +2500 – The Donnie Whalberg of Golf Boys was a stroke away from winning a major last year a Whistling Straits. Like he said in the “Oh Oh Oh” video “I want my birdies all day long.” Well he should get them he is #1 on the tour in Greens in Reg. I like Bubba, let’s hope he doesn’t forget his golf shoes.
Adam Scott +3000 – I think Adam Scott is a pussy. But did anyone catch that Stevie Williams is on his bag this week? Hank Haney tweeted that he was shocked by this. This is really intriguing, especially because Scott always seems to hang around during big events. I could see this going really bad or really well for Scott. Had a 2nd place finish at the Masters. 40th in GIR
Geoff Ogilvy +3500 – A couple of years ago people thought Ogilvy could start to compete with Tiger, then he dropped off with a swing change and injuries. He is a former US Open champion (’06 at Winged Foot) which is on record as one of the longest Open courses ever. He had a sneaky 4th place finish at the Masters at this price, why not take a chance. 108th in GIR.
Paul Casey +4000 – A lot of golf experts thing he is the most talented player in the World. He showed it the last couple years with 14 top ten finishes. I don’t think he plays often enough in the States to demand the respect he deserves. He’s 8th in GIR and a top 50 putter on the Tour.
Aaron Baddeley +5000 – Badds has had a great year, 4 top tens including a 6th place at the PLAYERS plus a 1st at Northen Trust. He’s very consistent at hitting greens in regulation and putting. Great odds here.
Good luck and Go B’s
